Abbey J has been working in the event space for almost a decade. With styles and programs spanning national philanthropic events, Pro Golf Tournament events and now with her latest move into the electronic music scene has found inspiration as an Exhibition Artist. Under the pseudonym of The Disco Witch, Abbey brings the disco ball, a universally beloved object, into new shapes, new light, and new applications.

“You have the opportunity to reshape the concept, and bring the disco ball away from its one purpose in the middle of a dark dance floor. Giving it an opportunity to shine in places you would not necessarily expect and in ways you may have never seen. I want people to bring disco balls into their homes, their spaces, their environments and allow them to reaffirm their ever lasting symbolism for dance and community.”

Not your ordinary disco ball

Abbey has set out to rethink the dance floor. “A single disco ball with a pin spot and a motor will get you far, but to really shine, you need a bit of magic.” Taking on the concept of creating shapes and filling spaces in ways you have yet to see at clubs around the US. She takes inspiration from sacred geometry, functional aspects of design, and the three dimensional nature of the disco ball to envelope the space in light.

Disco Down the Drain

With her recent project (2021) Disco Down the Drain, Abbey repurposed a century old cast iron bathtub that much like the symbol of the disco ball has lasted the test of time.

“Wash away the night with me”

The exhibition was shown at two special AI events hosted by the DC event collective Nu Androids, and will be on display as a part of their 2022 winter wearhouse rotating art exhibit space.
